As for my past, I have spent many years in the restaurant industry, also quite a few as a golf pro, and finally returned to design full time after using it at every job along the way. Since becoming a full time designer I've won some hardware for it, which is mostly impressive to other designers. But I really enjoy applying the skills learned from other careers to enhance my designs. This is what makes a difference and stands out from phase one to launching a new design or campaign.
